Hi, I’m Matthew, founder of Gear to Grant.
Sports have made a huge impact on my life. They have opened doors I never thought possible, introduced me to inspiring coaches and mentors, and given me confidence, friendships, and lessons far beyond the game. I believe every kid deserves that same chance.
Growing up, my older brother and I were always playing sports. Each year, as he outgrew jerseys and sports gear, he would pass them along to me. It was his way of supporting me and making sure I had what I needed to keep playing the sports we both loved. It taught me early on that opportunities are meant to be shared.
That idea stayed with me.
I began thinking about how much quality sports equipment sits unused in garages, closets, and storage bins, while many families are working hard just to keep up with the rising costs of playing sports. Something as simple as shared gear could create real opportunity.
So at 14, I started Gear to Grant.
Our mission is simple: help more kids play. We collect donated gear, give it new life, place equipment directly into the hands of kids and programs that need it, and help remove barriers that can keep kids on the sidelines.
To me, this is about more than equipment. It is about making sure no kid misses out on the positive life lessons that sports can bring, including learning to overcome setbacks, build confidence, be part of a team, develop healthy habits, and gain mental clarity and resilience. It is about communities and athletes choosing to support one another and pass opportunity forward.
I am still learning and building one step at a time, but I hope Gear to Grant grows into something that gives more kids the same memories, lessons, and love for sports that it gave me.
Thank you for believing in our mission. Together, we can help more kids play and turn gear into opportunity.
How You Can Help
This mission is bigger than me. It depends on a community of donors, volunteers, coaches, families, and supporters who believe that access to sports should not be determined by income.
If you believe that no kid should have to sit out because of cost. If you’ve seen what sports can do for a young person’s life. I’d love for you to be part of this. Whether it’s donating gear, contributing funds, sponsoring a microgrant, volunteering your time, or simply sharing our story, every bit of support helps another kid get on the field.
Because every kid deserves a chance to play, grow, and belong. No kid should be priced out of playing sports because of where they live or what they can afford.
With gratitude,
Matthew
